A full survey about Moko based on the author's observations and subsequent reading. In this fascinating book, Horatio Gordon Robley not only demonstrated and explained the art of Māori tattooing, he also wrote chapters on the dried tattooed heads or Mokomokai. 


This is a 1969 facsimile reprint of the first edition of 1896. With 180 illustrations from drawings by the author and from photographs. The book is reproduced to the same size as the original first edition, and the cover design also reproduces the cover design of the first edition. 

VG with slipcase. Minor scratches on the edges of the front cover and the spine, and the slipcase is slightly shelf-worn.

Te Ropere, 1840-1930


Soldier, artist and author. Born Madeira. Arrived Auckland from Madrid on 4 January 1864 as ensign in 68th Durham Light Infantry. Was present at Gate Pa and Te Ranga, Tauranga, 1864. Left New Zealand for England with his regiment in 1865, but continued to paint and draw portraits of Maori, images of moko and scenes relating to the war and to Maori culture for many years. Published Moko: or Maori tattooing, London, 1896, and Pounamu: notes on New Zealand greenstone in London in 1915. Many of his drawings were used as sources for wood engravings in the Illustrated London news and Graphic in the mid-1860s and later. He retired as a Major-General in London in 1887
