The author has an Antarctic association for nearly 40 years. He has the degree of Doctor of Science for original Antarctic research and in 2010 received the New Zealand Antarctic Medal. His last publication was "Call of the Ice" - 50 years of New Zealand in Antarctica (David Bateman 2007).
