Before Chudleigh came to New Zealand in 1861, agd 20, he promised his mother to keep a diary for her benefit. This he did, and after her death went on with it until a few weeks before his own death in 1920. The spelling is his. Any necessary notes are inserted in the text between square brackets. the diary gives a good account of station life in Canterbury in the early 1860s and in the Chatham Islands after 1865; the escape of the Hau-hau prisoners of war from the Chathams and E.R.C.'s narrow escape from death at their hands; his travels through New Zealand in 1875 from Hokianga nto the Bluff in search of a farm; the discovery and development of his farm in the Waikato; fires and shipwrecks on the Chathams and continued Maori troubles; his leading position on those islands; his inheritance and loss of 40,000 pounds; and finally his success with both properties aided by his wife, Mabel Potts, whom he married in 1881. ...Show more
