The Story of New Zealand: Past and Present—Savage and Civilized Vol.I&II (1859)

Author(s): Arthur S. Thomson

Early NZ | Secondhand

A late nineteenth-century account of New Zealand's then young history, generally considered to the first scholarly history of these islands.  A.S. Thomson was a prominent military surgeon who served in New Zealand during a period of relative peace, and completed this work and a work on the health of the Maori.  His views on Maori and their society reflect very much the colonial mindset, and do not show a genuine attempt at understanding the Maori.

The first volume's binding has been repaired, and the original cover is worn but intact.  The second volume is in need of repair; the covers are detached, and the binding is cracked.  Interiors of both copies are in reading condition, however their is heavy foxing of the preliminaries, and foxing throughout.
