Despite its drawbacks of isolation, inclement weather and barrenness, the author doubts if any other New Zealand town of like size had even a fraction of the varied interests which the hill had to offer. Here in a little world apart, was an existence geared to the winning of coal. The author lived at Denniston for twenty years and these memories have inspired recent successful fiction.
