$90.00 NZD

Category: Motoring

This officially licensed 120th anniversary edition of Indian Motorcycle tells the complete story of Indian, America's first mass-produced motorcycle maker, from its start as a bicycle manufacturer to the purchase of the brand by Polaris Industries in 2011 and the subsequent new Indian motorcycles--updat ed to include new photography, the story of the latest models, including the FTR1200, Chieftain, Challenger, and Roadmaster, and Indian's return to racing. In the early years of the 20th century, Indian dominated the world's racetracks and showrooms, earning the brand a worldwide reputation for quality, performance, reliability, and technical innovation with such classic machines as the Chief, Scout and Four. But the once-mighty company fell on hard times and in 1953 was forced to file bankruptcy. The Indian brand never quite died, however, thanks in large part to fanatically devoted enthusiasts, who tried to resurrect it for over half a century. Finally, Polaris, maker of the highly regarded Victory brand of motorcycles, purchased the brand and released the Chief and Scout, models that once again restored Indian to its rightful place in the motorcycle pantheon.Indian Motorcycle is the most complete and up-to-date history of this classic American motorcycle. ...Show more

$79.99 NZD

Available Stock:

Category: Motoring

From the single-cylinder bikes of the 1950s to the high-performance sportbikes of today, The Complete Book of Ducati Motorcycles showcases the entire spectrum of Ducati. Legendary Ducati motorcycles have something of a rags-to-riches story. This Italian motorcycle manufacturer began by selling motorized bicycles to impoverished residents of post-World War II Italy. Today, Ducati is the world's premier manufacturer of street motorcycles whose sales continue to rise year after year. Its svelte, hyper-accelerating motorcycles are two-wheeled wonders that are fluent in the language of speed. The Complete Book of Ducati Motorcycles traces the stunning chronology of the motorcycles dreamed up by Ducati, from the 1950s to present day. Laid out for the first time in encyclopedia form with gorgeous photography and insights from Ducati expert Ian Falloon, this book offers motorcycle enthusiasts a closer look at the craftsmanship, power, and beauty of these extraordinary motorcycles. The book features all of the motorcycles from Ducati's storied history, including the groundbreaking Desmodromic 750 Super Sport, the Mike Hailwood Replica, the Superbike-dominating 916, and the epic Panigale. From the street bikes that gave birth to the very notion of the modern superbike to the racing motorcycles that dominated tracks in Great Britain, Europe, and North America since the latter part of the twentieth century, The Complete Book of Ducati Motorcycles runs the full gamut of sportbikes. It's a collection that demands shelf space in the library of any true motorcycle collector or fan. ...Show more

Smoke and Mirrors - Cars, Photography and Dreams of the Open Road by Hoxton Mini Press

$55.00 NZD

Available Stock:

Category: Motoring

Car photography often evokes the same recycled tropes. Predictably slick, hi-spec images on the front pages of glossy magazines, or huge blow-ups on giant billboards which have one designed aim: to sell a lifestyle. But our relationship with cars is so much more meaningful than these images might sugges t. Like the camera, the car has changed the way we explore the world. With cars came road trips, and with road trips came some of the most important photographic documentaries of our time. A car is a vehicle not just for transport but for our hopes, desires and dreams. In Smoke and Mirrors, a selection of world-renowned and up-and-coming photographers come together to pay tribute to the car. From Nick Turpin's images of 'donut' skid marks, Todd Hido's painterly landscapes taken through wet windscreens and William Green's shots of sleeping Tokyo taxi drivers, these photographs display cars at their most playful, introspective and meaningful, reminding us that there is more to them than just metal and machinery - for cars are emotionally intertwined with the lives we live. ...Show more

Our Forgotten Tragedy the Building Of the Hyde Memorial by Elizabeth Coleman

$15.00 NZD

Available Stock:

Category: Transport and Maritime

In February 1991 a memorial commemorating the 21 people killed in the Hyde railway accident of 1943 was dedicated. This booklet tells of the persistence shown by a small group of people to have New Zealand's second worst railway disaster officially marked after 48 years of silence. Told largely from the perspective of Elizabeth Coleman, whose father and brother died on the train, the booklet speaks of the healing that came with having the tragedy formally acknowledged. The efforts required to realise the memorial are described in the booklet as is a detailed account of the dedication itself. Many colour photographs illustrate the event. The building of the memorial near the site of the accident on the now popular Central Otago Rail Trail has resulted in the once largely unknown disaster being revealed to thousands of visitors each year. ...Show more
